Naïve mice were inoculated with throat secretions collected from infected mice. At 5 dpi, viral antigens were found in epithelial cells of the lungs, gastric and intestinal mucosa, and in infiltrating inflammatory cells of the small intestine (solid arrows; 400× magnification). At 5 dpi, limited interstitial pneumonia and inflammatory cell infiltration, degeneration and necrosis of epithelial cells in the gastric mucosa, and vacuolar degeneration of epithelial cells in small intestine villi was seen (100× magnification).Back to article page
